Academic advising is an on-going collaborative educational process of shared responsibility between student and advisor—a partnership. This partnership requires participation and involvement of both the advisor and the student.
Advising Responsibilities
Advisors
- Assist you in developing and achieving realistic academic goals based on your interests, abilities and needs.
- Encourage you to develop decision making skills and assume responsibility for your actions and plans.
- Encourage you to review your progress toward major declaration to assure early detection of problems.
- Provide you with information about alternatives, limitations, and possible consequences of academic decisions.
- Effectively communicate University policies, procedures and requirements.
- Refer you to available campus resources to meet your individual needs.
- Provide a respectful, supportive atmosphere and maintain confidentiality.
Students
- Initiate and maintain contact with their academic advisor and check their Webmail on a regular basis.
- Keep scheduled appointments and bring a list of questions or areas of interest to discuss
- Discuss factors that affect academic performance
- Follow through on advisor recommendations
- Learn academic requirements, policies, procedures and requirements
- Explore different majors and the career options that accompany them. Reflect on their interests and values to pick a discipline or field of study that is a good fit for them.
- Utilize campus resources to facilitate academic and personal success.
- Accept responsibility for decisions.
