Undeclared Program: Academic Advising — A Partnership

Academic advising is an on-going collaborative educational process of shared responsibility between student and advisor—a partnership. This partnership requires participation and involvement of both the advisor and the student.

Advising Responsibilities

Advisors

  • Assist you in developing and achieving realistic academic goals based on your interests, abilities and needs.
  • Encourage you to develop decision making skills and assume responsibility for your actions and plans.
  • Encourage you to review your progress toward major declaration to assure early detection of problems.
  • Provide you with information about alternatives, limitations, and possible consequences of academic decisions.
  • Effectively communicate University policies, procedures and requirements.
  • Refer you to available campus resources to meet your individual needs.
  • Provide a respectful, supportive atmosphere and maintain confidentiality.

Students

  • Initiate and maintain contact with their academic advisor and check their Webmail on a regular basis.
  • Keep scheduled appointments and bring a list of questions or areas of interest to discuss
  • Discuss factors that affect academic performance
  • Follow through on advisor recommendations
  • Learn academic requirements, policies, procedures and requirements
  • Explore different majors and the career options that accompany them. Reflect on their interests and values to pick a discipline or field of study that is a good fit for them.
  • Utilize campus resources to facilitate academic and personal success.
  • Accept responsibility for decisions.
