Computing GPA

Breadcrumb

To compute your Grade Point Average (GPA), multiply the grade points of each grade by the unit value of the course. (If you received a "C" in ECON 002, multiply the 2.0-grade points by the 5 units. If you received a "B+", multiply 3.3-grade points by 5 units.) Add all the grade points earned in each class taken and divide by the total number of units attempted for a grade.

For example: If you took the following four courses and earned these grades:

Course Grade Grade Points Units Grade Points Total
ECON 002 C 2.0 5.0 10.0
ENGL 1A A- 3.7 4.0 14.80
PHYS 005 B 3.0 4.0 12.0
PSYC 001 B 3.0 4 12.0
TOTALS     17.0 48.80

Divide grade points total (48.80) by units total (17.0), GPA = 2.87.

Grade Point Values (per one unit)

A+ = 4.0
A = 4.0
A- = 3.7
B+ = 3.3
B = 3.0
B- = 2.7
C+ = 2.3
C = 2.0
C- = 1.7
D+ = 1.3
D = 1.0
D- = 0.7
F = 0.0 (not passing)

Units Per Class Level

Your class level (freshman, sophomore, junior, senior) is determined by the total number of quarter units you have completed, not by the requirements you have satisfied or the length of time you have been at the University. The minimum number of units required for all B.A. and B.S. degrees is 180.

Lower Division

Freshman 0.00-44.9
Sophomore 45.0-89.9

Upper Division

Junior 90.0-134.9
Senior 135.0 or more
